01Where it came from

Church went to Ecuador twice, following the route Alexander von Humboldt had written up, and spent two years turning the sketches into this. It went on show in New York in 1859 in a darkened room, framed like a window, lit by gas, with palms arranged in front of it. People paid to file past.

It was not sold as art exactly. It was sold as a place you could visit without the sea voyage, which is a claim this site is in no position to look down on.

◆What it is made of

Heart of the Andes, the painting itself.
The paint. The only evidence there is.
The depth the model inferred: pale is near, dark is far.
The guess. Pale is near, dark is far. Nobody measured any of it.
The reconstructed layer that sits behind the painting.
Behind it. Grown inward from the edges, and seen only where something moves off it.

02What the model made of it

Haze is how a painter fakes distance and it is also how a depth model measures it. Church put the blue in to push the peak back; the model reads the blue and concludes the peak is back. Two systems using one convention in opposite directions, and neither of them has ever been to Ecuador.

03Why this one move

Church went to Ecuador twice and came back with a picture that is really a survey. Slicing it at even intervals does not impose anything on it. It just finishes the argument he was already making.

04Worth looking at

The foreground leaves move and the mountain does not. Church spent two years making you believe that, and it survives being turned into geometry, which is not a thing most illusions do.
